Vicky, thank you so much for providing some information about this project. Is there a map of which areas of farmland are under HKBWS management?

Dear Koren and members, Thank you for your support! Yes, there is a map showing the location of each farmland operating under the HKBWS management agreement. However, I think it is not suitable to disclose the exact location and post the map of the farmlands to the public. Members who are interested in the conservation of Long Valley, you are welcome to join our volunteer group and/or eco-tour guiders who are provided with more information on the project. Details of the two activities will be announced soon. Moreover, I'll try to post some photos of the farmlands so that members can know more about the condition and progress of the management scheme. Let me explain more about the management measures applied to different habitat types. Shallow water habitat (= Fallow wet agricultural land): Weeds (such as Mikania and Wedelia trilobata) and a portion of vegetation on the farmlands have been cleared. Water was pumped into the farmland and maintained at certain level which is desirable for target bird species. Wet agricultural land (=Active wet agricultural land): Weeds (such as Mikania and Wedelia trilobata) on the farmlands have been cleared. Soil are ploughed and flooded with water. The water level is maintained at certain level for planting of specific crops. Water Chestnut seeds are germinating and will be planted to the farmland soon. Chinese Arrow-head will be planted around August. Dry agricultural land: Flowering Chinese Cabbage was planted and remained on the farmland for flowering and seeding so as to provide food for target bird species. Farmland margins: Target plant species (mainly grass and herbs) were planted on the margins of farmlands in order to provide food and shelter for birds. ¥H¤U¬O¦b¦UºØ¥Í¹Ò¬I¦æªººÞ²z±¹¬I ²L¤ô¥Í¹Ò (=¶¢¸mªº¤ô¥Ð)¡G²M°£¹A¥Ð¤¤ªºÂø¯ó(¦p¡GÁ¨¥Ìµâ©M¤Tµõ¸ð¾ãÛµâ)©M³¡¥÷´Óª«¡A±N ¤ô¤Þ¨ì¥Ð¤¤ ¡A¨Ã±N¤ô¦ìºû«ù¦b¦X¾A¥Ø¼Ð³¶³¾ªº°ª«×¡C Àã¹A¦a (=¯Ñ§@¤¤ªº¤ô¥Ð)¡G²M°£¹A¥Ð¤¤ªºÂø¯ó(¦p¡GÁ¨¥Ìµâ©M¤Tµõ¸ð¾ãÛµâ)¡A½¤g¨Ã±N ¤ô¤Þ¨ì¥Ð¤¤¡F ¤ô¦ì·|ºû«ù¦b«ü©wªº°ª«×¨ÓºØ´Ó¯S©wªº¹A§@ª«¡C²{¦b¡A°¨¿áªººØ¤l¥¿¦b µo ªÞ¡A«Ý¥Íªø¨ì¤@©wªº°ª«×«K·|²¾´Ó¨ì¹A¦aºØ´Ó¡F¦Ó·O©h«h·|¦b¤K¤ëºØ´Ó¡C °®¹A¦a¡G¥DnºØ´Óµæ¤ß¡Aµæ]·|¯d¦b¥Ðùئ۵M¦a¥Íªø¡B¶}ªá¡Bµ²¬ó¡A¬°³¶³¾´£¨Ñ¹ª«¡C ¹A¥ÐÃä½t¡G¥Ø¼Ð´Óª«(¥Dn¬O¯ó¥»´Óª«)·|ºØ´Ó¦b¹A¥ÐªºÃä½t¦ì¸m¡A¬°³¶³¾´£¨Ñ¹ª«©M´Ï®§³B¡C

Thanks again Vicky for providing further information. I think I will volunteer to be involved with this project as soon as I am less busy. I hope there are things that a non-Cantonese speaker can do. Maybe I am missing something, or I just still don't understand enough about Hong Kong and how it works, but I am still not sure why the map of areas being managed by HKBWS is sensitive information? I would appreciate if someone could educate me further on this. What are you afraid will happen if this is made public? Cheers, Koren

Hi Koren, Since the LV project is kind of experiment, we would like to minimize human disturbance to the farmlands, especially at this beginning stage. So we will try not to disclose the exact location of the farmlands to the public. Hope you understand our view. Vicky
