Po Toi 蒲台島 2006 Summer 夏

This juvenile Great Tit was one of two together on Po Toi today, 29th June, in the large tree next to the jetty. This is my first record of Great Tit this year on Po Toi (possibly a first ever record for Great Tit on Po Toi?), and must be an example of juvenile dispersal after fledging on the mainland or some other island. Both birds, which were clearly together, looked very young.

Other records for June are

Visited 6 times, 1,2,3,6,13 and 29.

Yellow Bittern. Max 5 on 2,3 and 6, incl up to 2 on SE peninsular. None on 29.
Cattle Egret. Numbers gradually reduced to 2 imm on 13, then none on 29.
Indian Cuckoo. Last seen/heard on 2.
Koel. 1 on 1 only my second record this year.
Little Swift. 4 on 2 and 3.
Grey Wagtail. Late migrant seen at SE point on 3.
Brown Shrike. Last seen on 2.
Oriental Reed Warbler. Last seen on 1.
Great Tit. 2 juv on 29.

Sea Birds.

Local Black-naped and Bridled Terns seen until 3 (but none after) were the only sea birds.
1 Cattle Egret flying S on 1

Report for July.

Visited 2 times only, 4th and 6th, due to absence in UK.

Land Birds

Residents through June and early July (*=young seen) - Reef Egret, *Black Kite, *Spotted Dove, Greater Coucal, Lesser Coucal, *Red-whiskered Bulbul, *Chinese Bulbul, Sooty-headed Bulbul, Magpie Robin, *Violet Whistling Thrush, *Yellow-bellied Prinia, *Common Tailorbird, *Black-faced Laughing Thrush, *Black Drongo, *Crested Myna, Spotted Munia, Large-billed Crow.

Other species normally resident seemed to disappear in June and July - Barn Swallow, Japanese White-eye, Magpie, Black-collared Starling, White-rumped Munia. These either left the island or perhaps moved to more sheltered parts of the island (June and July have almost continuous SW winds blowing directly into the harbour area).

Other land birds seen in July

Black-crowned Night Heron - imm on 4.
White-bellied Sea Eagle - imm on 4.
Tree Sparrow - 2 adults on 4 first records since May. Acted like new arrivals rather than residents and not seen on 6.
Great Tit - 2 juvs on 4 and 6, first seen on 29 June.

Only sea birds seen were up to 8 Bridled Terns flying both ways past Po Toi, presumably HK breeders flying to fishing grounds S of Po Toi.

My first visit to Po Toi today after 6 weeks away in UK.

No sign of any trees down from the typhoons but the vegetation growth has made many of the dirt paths almost impassable. In the sandy field where the Chinese Thrush was so easy to see earlier this year, the grass is now tall enough to hide a tiger.

Also no sign of any migrants. Only the two Great Tits, still in the large tree near the jetty, a female Koel and a White-throated Kingfisher. No sea birds, which is not surprising as the wind was light westerly. Autumn has not yet started on Po Toi.

A small movement of Barn Swallows off Po Toi today - 24 all flying SW over the sea between 10.30am and 12.30am. Also a White Wagtail and a Green Sandpiper! - first record for Po Toi this year. 3 Bridled Terns were probably local birds.

No migrants on the land although only half covered due to a heavy rainstorm.

An easterly wind today, and many more birds to be seen, both residents such as Bulbuls and Mynas, and the first autumn migrants. Which supports the theory that the resident birds move around the island according to the prevailing wind direction (see second posting above) and perhaps the last record below also does.

Striated Heron 1
Arctic Warbler 1
Asian Paradise Flycatcher 2
White-shouldered Starling 1
Yellow-fronted Canary 2 - the pair last seen on 25.5?

No time for sea watching today.

An interesting weekend on Po Toi.

A Dollarbird, first seen on Thursday 24th, was present throughout the weekend. This must be an early record, the earliest date in Avifauna is 6th September.

A Hoopoe arrived on Saturday but was very easily disturbed and only stayed a short time.

Other birds of interest were 10 Pacific Swifts over the SE peninsular yesterday evening at about 6pm. Also on Saturday, a movement of Yellow Wagtails overflying Po Toi in small groups throughout the day. And today the first returning migrant egrets, two flocks of Great Egrets totalling 9 birds flying S over the sea. Two Common/Aleutian type Terns on Saturday were the first seabird migrants of the autumn.

Of the resident birds, the two Great Tits which arrived as fledglings in June have now split up and appear to have set up separate territories, one around the jetty area and the other between the toilet block and the temple. If they are both males. they will be lucky to find any females on Po Toi.

Finally, the best news of all, a real shower available on Po Toi at last. Cold water only, but after months of bucket showers, anything coming out of the shower head is pure heaven.

Some good birds in the last few days of August.

On 29th, a first year Asian Brown Flycatcher, which was still there today.

30th was the best day, very light winds all day and very hot.

In the first 2 hours after dawn, Yellow Wagtails were migrating in ones and twos flying south out to sea directly over the S point. Also with them, some White Wagtails and Richard's Pipits, with 6 Whimbrel and 15 Pond Herons also migrating south further out.

On the land, a Forest Wagtail, a first year Brown Shrike and an adult Chestnut-winged Cuckoo.

At mid-day, a flock of 10 migrant Black Kites passed through

Today, the wind was SW force 4 but the Yellow Wagtails, White Wagtails and Richard's Pipits continued to migrate in the first hour after dawn directly into the wind. Also 2 Pond Herons, which eventually gave up the struggle and headed west for Lamma Island.

My last photo is a juvenile Striated Heron which has been on the island since 22nd.

My complete records for August are given below.
This will be my last entry under Po Toi Summer, Po Toi Autumn begins next week.
