Birdwatching 10-15th sept in HK 外藉鳥友訪港尋鳥伴

Flying back from Australia to Germany I'll do a five-day stopover for birdwatching in HK. I'm interested in all birds especially species occuring in europe.

Is there any local birder who has time and fun to show me birdlife in HK?

I also have experience in ringing and could help.

Any tips where to go? How do you reach Po Toi?

Thanks for your help, Tobi (tobi.ulm@web.de)
P.S.:I'll be with the hkbws-group at Mai Po on sunday.

You reach Po Toi by ferry from Aberdeen at 10am on Tuesday or Thursday. Unfortunately you only get 3 hours on the island using the ferry service which returns at 2pm.

I suggest you are just as likely to see the migrants you want at Mai Po, Long Valley, Tai Po Kau, Kap Lung or Ng Tung Chai and you can spend all day there. You can get directions to these places on Sunday.

Thanks a lot, Geoff!

Maybe I'll go to Po Toi anyway - sounds to be an interesting place for migrants?! Moreover Aleutian Tern is one of my favourite species and the ferry to the island seems to be good for it?

The other mentioned places, I got maps and the "Woodward & Carey" book from Volker Schmidt, a friend of mine, who worked in HK for a year. Maybe you've some seasonal tips?

Thanks again, Tobias Epple

OK, if you go to Po Toi next week I should be there, I intend to be there all week staying on the island. If you tell me which day, I'll meet the ferry and show you around.

The ferry is Tsui Wah Ferry Service and leaves from the Hong Kong Ferry Terminal in the harbour of Aberdeen (south side of HK island) at 10am Tuesday or Thursday. You may see Aleutian Tern from the ferry or from the island seawatching point. It takes about 1 hour for the journey and the ferry returns to Aberdeen at 2pm.

Maybe see you on Po Toi.
