Autumn Departures 秋季離港航班

While everyone has an eye out for new arrivals with the cooler weather. Yesterday evening at Bak Gong Au (Tung Chung Gap) there was an interesting sight of migrants leaving.
Just before sunset, with the strong northly blowing, we saw several large flocks of Little Egrets heading south. In a matter of about 5 minutes almost 1000 birds passed. Riding the wind, they were moving extremely quickly, 120 kph or more at a guess!
It is an interesting thought to wonder about the balance of the energy value to justify them leaving Hong Kong at this time of the year in order to find better feeding grounds to the South.

Do 'we' know if the local breeding birds are replaced by others from further north in the winter or if they residents?

I also saw a large flock of egrets (around 60) flying high over Long Valley heading south yesterday evening.
