放生 Releasing Wildlife in Religious Ceremonies

A wild day out for fish, grasshoppers and chickens

Hundreds of fish, grasshoppers and wild chickens were freed yesterday by a group of animal lovers.
The Asian Agricultural Development Foundation, a private group which describes itself as consisting of animal lovers, released the fish off Lei Yue Mun near Lam Tin, and the grasshoppers and chickens into woods near Ma On Shan.
Releasing animals such as fish and songbirds into the wild is a rite traditionally associated with Buddhism.
However, Billy Cheng Kim-hung, a representative of the 300 people who participated yesterday, said the foundation did not have a religious background or motive. "We love animals and would like to educate and inspire the people of Hong Kong that animals have their right to live," he said.
"Fish symbolise animals from the sea, grasshoppers belong to the land and chickens from the sky.
"By setting free animals from the sea, the land and the sky, we try to demonstrate that all animals ?deserve their freedom."
Mr Cheng stressed that the ?activity had nothing to do with the recent outbreak of bird flu across East Asia.
The foundation purchased the animals used in yesterday's ceremony from the Cheung Sha Wan wholesale market.
They said all the wild chickens had been vaccinated and should be free of the bird flu virus.
The foundation plans to release more animals in June.
Such activities are frowned upon by scientists and environmentalists, who say that many ?released birds and fish do not have the capacity to survive in the wild.
There are also concerns that some of the animals which do manage to survive go on to disrupt the ecosystem because they are not naturally occurring.
In May 2001, a Buddhist temple freed hundreds of fish off Siu Sai Wan to pacify the souls of chickens slaughtered to halt the spread of bird flu.

放生和吃野味一樣，會鼓勵更多人去捕捉野生動物，破壞生態。如果說放生的動物並非野生，則無異拿牠們到野外去送死。兩者都是好心做壞事。
其實廢除放生習俗才是功德無量。

【明報專訊】據《深圳商報》報道，深圳三洲田「海上大觀」附近日前發現眾多鳥屍，數量上千隻鳥，相關部門經過調查初步確認，這些鳥死亡與禽流感無關，其死亡原因是寒風中放生鳥兒不能適應野外環境。
初步排除禽流感
該報周一（9日）接獲讀者提供的消息後立即趕往現場調查，由於內地爆發多宗禽流感疫情，深圳衛生防疫、野生動物保護、林業等部門人員聞訊亦相繼趕到現場，但見在「海上大觀」廣場裏的草叢間和樹林裏，不少鳥兒橫屍其間。而廣場上仍有數百隻麻雀在來回飛動，但卻總飛不高，行動也比較遲緩，一些麻雀東倒西歪地縮成一團。
現場所見，大部分死鳥為麻雀，小部分為相思鳥等，死亡數目至少在千隻以上。經 鹽田區農林水務局初步調查顯示，這些鳥是家養，人為放生後不適應這裏的環境而 大批死亡。
人工飼養不適應野外
據鹽田區農林水務局有關負責人表示，他們對遊客進行了調查，一名遊客確認了這 個說法。本月8日，有人購買了1萬隻鳥來此放生，同時還在廣場放置了米粒等一些 飼料。專家認為，這些放生的鳥兒可能是家養，根本不能適應這裏的野生條件而死 亡。有關部門化驗現場米粒、飼料盒的結果顯示，不含有毒成分。
隨著環保意識的增強，每年年初總有許多深圳市民買來野生動物放生。有關專家指 出，放生是一門科學，要非常謹慎。目前市面上有許多動物屬於人工飼養，這些動 物對野外的地理環境、氣候不適宜，被放歸後很可能會因為「水土不服」而生病甚 至死亡。專家提醒市民，如果一定要放生，最好先和野生動物保護部門聯繫，在專 家的指導下科學放生。

I think the best best way to stop releasing activities is to legislate new laws to HEAVILY FINE people who deliberately release birds, fish etc to the wild without written permission from government department, such as AFCD.
You simply can't stop them without tough new laws.
Those scientists/researchers who want to release them to the wild (for some reasons) must apply (with detailed scientific explanation) to AFCD for permission.
Our government should educate the public not to engage in releasing activities by means of scientific explanation.
I think most of them do not have scientific knowledge to justify deliberate releases. 
We should join with other enviromental organizations (such as WWF) to get more power to talk to Legislative Council members about this issue.

But the mentioned govt dept itself may need to be educated with the correct concept of reintroduction.
I really wonder how professional (both in policy and technical levels) of this department is?
Who killed the juvenile Barking deer at Sai Kung?

1. 請留意第二則留言中提及的事件其實在深圳發生。
2. 由於放生涉及宗教信仰，類似的大規模死亡又不常見，所以問題一直沒有正式 拿出來討論和處理。
3. 立法和教育要雙管齊下。應該多報導和解釋放生的禍害，讓人們明白其中的問 題。如果能夠多些機會見到放生動物的困境，真正誠心祈福行善的人也應該會放下 屠刀，立地成佛吧！
4. 曾經聽過港大某教授討論在港重新引入原有的野生鳥類，其中牽涉很多考慮， 相信漁護署對此也有相當認識，不會容許人隨便引入新物種。

更有「智慧放生」之說。
有篇「原來我們可以做得更好」的有關「放生與保育」的文章，反映了尊重生態與 宗教文化揉合中的進程。

放生是宗教徒行善積福，實踐慈悲心的儀式；而現代自然保育背後的理念則是愛惜 生命，減少人為破壞，兩者頗為相近，並沒有矛盾。
如果人們在放生之前，先來一個簡單的「環境影響評估」，好好思考一下放生動物 的處境，會不會間接鼓勵商人濫養濫捕，做法是否可以持續，相信會更加功德無量 。
科技進步，時常見到寺廟中的誦經由錄音機替代，香燭也改為電燈泡，放生又何嘗 不能夠現代化？與其將錢交給捕捉或飼養野生動物圖利的商人，何不將錢用來支持 自然保育工作，例如拯救瀕危物種、防止生境破壞、或者管理保護區？
如果宗教團體和自然保育組織可以互相合作，結合放生和自然保育，做到各得其所 ，將會是眾生之福。
期望有一天見到人們放生的不再是從野外捕來的外來物種，而是傷癒或籠養復育的 「原居民」。

故事末段提到「探險者後來還舉行了隆重的放飛儀式」，究竟是為什麼原因？這個 「放飛」背後的意義是什麼？值得細思。

此篇文章是記載於「人與動物的故事 - 金城出版社] 的簡體字書裡的。上句是文章的引子，作者是啞樵。 除了引子外，內文跟網版一樣。
書內還有其他動物和鳥的故事，鳥故事包括有：
- 燕子知環保
- 林雕之死 (欸欸... ）
- 35 歲的白鵝與它主人的故事 （上了吉尼斯世界紀錄）

【 明 報 專 訊 】 本 月 初 船 灣 淡 水 湖 涌 尾 停 車 場 附 近 約 30 隻 死 鳥 倒 斃 草 地 ， 大 多 是 麻 雀 ， 嘉 道 理 農 場 職 員 發 現 後 ， 將 僅 餘 一 隻 奄 奄 一 息 的 送 往 救 治 ， 惜 已 返 魂 乏 術 。 由 於 涌 尾 並 非 麻 雀 的 天 然 生 存 環 境 ， 職 員 相 信 是 農 曆 新 年 前 有 人 放 生 出 來 ， 由 於 放 生 鳥 大 多 未 能 適 應 野 外 環 境 ， 往 往 不 足 一 周 便 死 去 ， 祝 福 變 成 詛 咒 ， 猶 如 「 鳥 版 許 願 樹 」 。
正 研 究 放 生 雀 鳥 習 俗 對 生 態 影 響 的 港 大 生 態 學 及 生 物 多 樣 性 碩 士 研 究 生 陳 倩 慧 表 示 ， 這 些 均 為 放 生 鳥 常 用 品 種 ， 在 雀 仔 街 賣 4 元 一 隻 。 她 曾 在 雀 仔 街 統 計 ， 發 現 全 個 市 場 近 8000 隻 出 售 雀 鳥 中 ， 逾 半 專 賣 作 放 生 鳥 ， 反 映 市 場 需 求 殷 切 ， 部 分 更 是 稀 有 及 外 來 品 種 。
陳 說 ， 外 來 品 種 有 機 會 改 變 本 地 生 態 ， 台 灣 曾 有 一 種 當 地 特 有 的 雀 鳥 ， 因 與 放 生 鳥 是 近 親 ， 交 配 混 種 ， 從 此 該 特 有 品 種 變 得 極 稀 有 。 另 放 生 鳥 因 被 飼 養 已 久 ， 而 且 被 看 成 「 放 生 貨 物 」 ， 身 體 虛 弱 ， 一 般 被 放 生 後 都 難 以 適 應 自 然 環 境 ， 一 周 內 會 死 去 。
更 令 她 擔 憂 是 ， 放 生 已 變 成 一 種 「 習 俗 」 ， 「 部 分 人 認 為 放 生 雀 鳥 是 給 牠 們 自 由 ， 就 算 死 去 ， 亦 可 盡 快 完 成 輪 迴 ， 因 此 是 生 是 死 ， 放 生 都 是 一 件 『 好 事 』 」 。
