WWF was informed that yesterday (20th July 2006) AFCD and the Lok Ma Chau Border Police launched a joint operation on the Ramsar Site mudflat area and successfully caught and arrested 8 illegal cross border fishermen. In the operation one of the AFCD wardens was seriously injured and admitted to hospital. If you see any illegal activities on the mudflats please continue to write them down in the floating hide log book. WWF Mai Po Office

According to the government's Environmental Education Site, the Ramsar Site extends up to Tsim Bei Tsui only: http://resources.ed.gov.hk/envir-ed/text/hkissue/e_m1_6_6.htm However, if you suspect there are illegal immigrants border crossers around you should still report to the police.

In relation to the injured AFCD staff member: I learned that he was injured when the hovercraft overturned, but thankfully he has since made a full recovery. He was not injured as a result of violence from mudskipper collectors - AFCD staff have been threatened in the past. AFCD's work in protecting the Ramsar site is only possible with the co-operation of Marine Police, who have the authority equipment and training to handle such situations. It is good to see that positive action has been taken. Members are encouraged to continue reporting any mudskipper cllectors anywhere in Hong Kong Territory as they are all illegal border crossers and the Police should be protecting Hong Kong's borders from them. AFCD only have authority inside the Ramsar site, bu this is not true for the police. as stated before, call 999 and report "illegal border crossers" - they are not illegal immigrants because they do not stay inHK, but go back at the high tide. However, they are still illegal! Cheers Mike K
