2014 MPNR Summer Habitat Management Work

2014 MPNR Summer Habitat Management Work

Habitat Enhancement Work at Gei wai #19

This summer we are going to convert the landward end of Gei wai #19 into a rain-fed habitat by connecting the bund opposite to birdwatching Hide #3. The new rain-fed habitat will supplement Pond #24 in the southern end, serving as habitat for amphibians and dragonflies. Furthermore, wet reedbed will be restored to provide habitat for reedbed dependent birds.

Upon completion of the work at the end of September, the seaward end will be refilled with brackish water and the landward end with rainwater. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause over the coming months. For further information please contact the Mai Po Office at 2471-6212.

Sedges and Mangrove Seedling Management 2014

Every year WWF carries out control of sedges and mangrove seedlings from the area of intertidal mudflat in front of the floating bird-watching hides. This is necessary to maintain the area as a valuable feeding habitat for waterbirds as well as to promote ecological research, education and birdwatching.

WWF staff and contractors will commence the 2014 works in July and will complete the work no later than the end of October. Our work is monitored by AFCD, who together with Districts Lands Office, give us their consent each year upon approval of a WWF impact assessment report.

To minimise disturbance, our staff and contractors will only work during periods of low tide when fewer waterbirds are present in front of the hides. For further information please contact the Mai Po Office at 2471-6212.

Habitat Enhancement Work at Gei wai #23

This summer the northern end of Gei wai #23 will be converted to a rain-fed reedbed habitat by connecting the bund at the middle of the gei wai, so that rainwater can be collected above the existing operational water level. This will create a wet reedbed to provide habitat for reedbed-dependent birds. The southern end will continue to operate as a roosting area for waterbirds, with brackish water maintained at shallow depth.

The work will start in July and is expected to be completed by mid-August, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause over the coming weeks. For further information please contact the Mai Po Office at 2471-6212.

Desilting Work at Gei wai #13

Following the traditional practice, water exchange is carried out twice per month at the Mai Po gei wai. This helps regulate the water temperature and brings nutrients to the mangroves, shrimps and fish in the gei wai. However, water exchange also carries silt from Deep Bay into the gei wai, which over time leads to the water channels in the gei wai becoming shallow and less suitable for the shrimps and fish. To reverse this problem, desilting work is carried out periodically in the gei wai to maintain water depth and facilitate water flow. The northern perimeter channel and the cross channels at Gei wai #13 are currently very shallow and will be desilted this summer.

During July and August, sections of the path between Gei wai #12 and #13 may need to be closed temporarily on weekdays. All work is expected to be completed by the end of October. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. For further information please contact the Mai Po Office at 2471-6212.

Habitat Enhancement Work at Gei wai #21

Gei wai #21 has been converted to open water habitat in 2009, serving as high-tide roosting area for shorebirds during spring and autumn, and at the same time attracting ducks and cormorants in winter. However, open water area at the landward side of the gei wai has been heavily invaded by sedges over the years.

Habitat enhancement work will be carried out with bull dozer and digger this summer. Sedges will be removed and open water area will be restored. A few small islands will also be constructed to attract waterbirds.

The gei wai has already been drained to facilitate the work which will be started later in August. The work is expected to be completed by the end of October, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause over the coming months. For further information please contact the Mai Po Office at 2471-6212.
