[Oversea] Fiji 2012 菲濟群島

Fiji 2012 菲濟群島

A trip to Fiji and New Caledonia in South Pacific in July 2012.  Share with you some of the pictures taken in Fiji.  Pictures of New Caledonia can be found here: http://www.hkbws.org.hk/BBS/view ... &extra=page%3D1

There are about 150 bird species in Fiji and has 26 endemic birds.  We visited three islands during our short stay including Taveuni, Viti Levu and Kadavu by air.  Each island has its own endemic.

The main targets in Taveuni are the Silktail and Orange Dove:  It’s lucky to have at least a record picture of the secretive Silktail.

Orange Dove is absolutely a stunner:

The very noisy Red Shining Parrot @ Taveuni

Friendly Ground Dove (M) is not friendly at all @ Taveuni

The Many-coloured Fruit-dove is certainly correctly named @ Taveuni

Can you count how many Many-coloured Fruit-dove in this tree?

Fiji White-eye is also an endemic species @ Taveuni

Polynesian Starling

Though this Vanikoro Boardbill is an endemic species, they are quite common and certainly can be seen everyday @ Taveuni

Male

Female

Bibi’s Hideaway provides self-contained bungalow for birders @ Taveuni

You can harvest their fruits by your own for free:

Sunset @ Taveuni

Need a local guide – better contact Bobby @ Taveuni

Undoubtedly the appearance of the Golden Dove is one of the highlights of the trip @ Suva

Masked Shining Parrot can be seen easily but taking a good picture is another story @ Suva

Barking Pigeon is another easily seen endemic bird @ Suva

Common & Jungle Mynah are everywhere @ Suva

Birdwatching while having breakfast at Raintree Lodge @ Suva where a number of White-collared Kingfishers constantly performed how they hunt at close range:

Red-vented Bulbul @ Nadi

Pacific Swallow @ Nadi

Love to see these beautiful tiny endemic Fiji Parrotfinch @ Nadi

Wattled Honeyeater @ Nadi

These lovely endemic Fiji Woodswallow are quite friendly @ Nadi

A juvenile Fiji Goshawk was seen but did not see any adult @ Nadi

Lots of Lesser Frigatebirds were seen while taking the boat ride from the airport to the lodge @ Kadavu

Polynesian Triller @ Kadavu

Golden Whistler (M) @ Kadavu

A non-stop Slaty Monarch @ Kadavu

Pacific Harrier @ Kadavu

It’s not easy to locate this Kadavu Whistling Dove but regrettably I’ve got the wrong setting in my camera @ Kadavu

Matava Eco Lodge @ Kadavu where u can see the 4 endemic species around

The view across Matava Eco Lodge @ Kadavu

And you need to struggle between birding and snorkeling everyday.  Kadavu has the 4th world’s longest barrier reef

The beach just across the air stripe @ Kadavu
