A white-breasted waterhen emerged from behind some water weed at Long Valley on March 28th. It quickly paddled through a brackish water pond, climbed up a muddy curb, raced alongside a filthy channel, rushed across a soiled open field, then disappeared behind a sloppy bank.  It is a marathon runner.
