Mai Po 米埔 Spring 2007 春

Oriental Plover on Mai Po access Rd

This morning at about 0900 a female Oriental Plover was on the first drained pond along the Mai Po access rd. Unfortuately It was flushed by a Black Kite around 0920 and flew north towards San Tin.

Also at Mai Po a massive 28 Nordmann's Greenshank, a Long-billed Dowitcher, 18 Grey-faced Buzzards and both male and female Blue-and-white Flycatchers.

also lots of other waders for a very nice day.


Members of the group I was leading also reported Red-necked Phalaropes and an Arctic Warbler along the Shing Mun River near the Regal Riverside Hotel.

Yesterday the following birds were seen at Mai Po or along the access rd.

Swinhoe's Egret - 1 B/Walk

Long-toed Stint - 2 Access Rd - first of the spring
Sanderling - 1 on the Boardwalk/Scrape- first of the spring
Spoon-billed Sandpiper - 1 on Scrape (not by me) - first of the spring

Asiatic Dowitcher - 3 on Pond 11

Nordmann's Greenshank - 40 (counted by Richard Lewthwaite) - Scrape

Little Tern - 2 - Boardwalk

Narcissus Flycatcher - 3 (inc 2 female and 1 male)

Chinese Starling - 20 Access Rd

Chestnut-eared Bunting - 1 - Access Rd nr Mai Po pumping station

This afternoon a Drongo Cuckoo was found by John Alcock near the AFCD Post at Mai Po. It was seen between 1:00pm and 1:30pm.

Other birds on the reserve today included approx 3000 Curlew Sandpipers, 3 Asiatic Dowitchers, 4 Sanderling, a Ruff and at least 5 Nrdmann's Greenshank, although only part of the Scrape was covered.

No sign of the Drongo Cuckoo today, but a few birds added to the wonderful array of waders:

Eurasian Spoonbill - 2
Black-faced Spoonbill - 22

Ruddy Shelduck - 1 - Tower hide
Lesser Tree Duck - 1 - Pond 15
Falcated Duck - 2 - Pond 15

Oriental Reed Warbler - 2- one with metal ring on right leg (my first this year!)

Japanese Paradise Flycatcher - 1 male - Tower hide
Asian Brown Flycatcher - 2
