Tai Po Kau, winter 2014-15

31 December 2014, Brown and yellow walk (high area)

Chinese Barbet 1, could be first record for Hong Kong subject to acceptance of record committee. The bird was seen near a big concrete water tank along the trail.
Eye-browed Thrush 1
Grey-backed Thrush, several
Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler 1
Red-billed Leiothrix, several

Chinese Barbet is a great record, I was hoping they will arrive sometime soon...I always find it possible for them to colonize Hong Kong since the closest population is only not far form Guangzhou. I wonder if the Red-headed Trogons can make it this far...I remember seeing them in Che Ba Ling years ago.

Tai Po Kau Winter 2015

Started a new thread because it is not autumn any more.

11 Jan 2015

Japanese Robin
Red-flanked Bluetail
Mountain Tailorbird
Goodson's Leaf Warbler

After seeing the reaction of other birders when I showed them these photos, checking 2012 records and searching for 'Japanese Robin' on this site, it seems this is a rare bird in Hong Kong, at least in recent years.  I didn't know this at the time so I am even more pleased with this record.

He was found just after the biggest picnic area.  I sat down to take photos of a Red-flanked Bluetail eating termites hoping to get a good shot.  After about 2 minutes the Robin flew in and I was able to get a few photos before some hikers scared it off.  I waited about 10 minutes for it to come back but it never showed.  On the way back, 2 hours later, the Bluetail was still there.

Sorry that these are already the best pictures, I guess this is a Chinese Blue Flycatcher/Hill Blue Flycatcher, also little bit look like a male Red flanked Bluetail. Any body can help to identify?

Hi Peter 2014,
could you please Indicate the location where you've seen this bird at TPK, I would be interesting to paid a look to it tomorrow morning.

I think it looks most like a Red-flanked Bluetail, legs are too long and overall shape seems wrong for a flycatcher.

agree with Kmatthew, looks like a Red-flanked Bluetail, sorry I watch these pics from my phone that definitly is getting too old....
then no need the location.

Thank you Jonathon and Matthew, the pics was taken at red trail, just about 50m after the 2nd picnic area, at 11am

Oriental Honey Buzzard

Bay Woodpecker heard
Probable Bar-tailed Cuckoo-dove fly-by near the end of red walk, very much larger then Spotted Dove, sharper wings with cuckoo like flight and overall more rounded body in flight.
