[Oversea] birding in Hokaido in Dec 2008

There is also a place to watch out for the Blakiston's Fish Owl, from what I remember. On the road to Nemuro from Kushiro at about the 100km marker, there is a turnoff to the right which leads to a bridge. I only heard it a long way off though. A lot further north (where I did not go to) at Rausu I think, there is a minshuku (forgot the name), near where a BFO will feed on most nights apparently.

Akkeshi Bay is good for ducks (Mergansers, Long-tailed Duck, Harlequin, Scoters etc.), the two eagle species mentioned and lots of gulls if you drive around the coastal area and quays.

Near Abashiri, there is a small park area (signposted) where you can feed ducks such as Pintail! The river next to it holds lots of ducks and gulls and you can get very good pictures.

Hope that helps a bit.
