Dear CarolB,

This is a great finding!!
I'm not sure about the ID of this bird. I think it is making nest there. But please do not disclose the location to anyone since breeding birds are very sensitive to human disturbance and the bird may abandon the nest or even the eggs/chicks in the worst case.
Please also try not to visit the site frequently to minimise disturbance.
Thank you very much!!

May experts please help ID this bird?

This is a Brown Fish Owl.
I agree that it seems to be nesting, which would be a very significant record.

Please DO NOT disclose the location and DO NOT disturb or come close to the bird, as large owls can sometimes be aggressive when nesting.

I have sent a PM regarding this record, please reply if you get the chance.

Dear CarolB,

There is no need to release this to anyone now, if you do not wish to.

You can record the breeding process carefully, with minimum disturbance to the bird.  This information would be helpful to anybody who may want to study this species.  After all this is over, please submit the information to HKBWS, so that we can record it properly in the HK Bird Report published by this society.  Thank you.

We had some debate regarding disclosure of sensitive sites before.  Here it is:

really great finding!
many people may come to you and ask about the location.
it's better to the bird if less people know the location as breeding bird as quite sensitive!
It's my first time to hear Brown Fish Owl nest on a building-like thing like this!
