Asian Paradise-Flycatcher + Japanese Paradise Flycatcher??

Asian Paradise-Flycatcher + Japanese Paradise Flycatcher??

30/8/2008 Tai Po Kau
Canon 20D + 400mm f/5.6

The first one is an Asian, but the for the other bird...we identified it as a juv. Japanese at field due to the slightly purplish back, but looking back at my photos I am leaning more towards Asian now. Any suggestions??

Asian

Japanese

I think "the other one" is a Japanese Paradise Flycatcher.
I can see red-violet color on its back.
And a close connection with the dark blue head and red-violet back without a grey neck like Asia Paradise Flycatcher.

I think the second one is an Asia Paradise Flycatcher because of the sharp demarcation between the black head and the grey breast.

Nice series Matthew!

I'd go for Asian for #2 - to me Japanese has really uniform black-grey breast and little head gloss in any lighting - but Asian can definitely look dull in the shade too! Hence I think #1 is indeterminate since I can't see the breast!

Thanks Cywong & Koel,

We first thought this was a Juv. Paradise Flycatcher when we saw it, we identified it as a juv. as we saw bits of yellow on the base of it's beak. We thought it was a Japanese due to the slightly purplish tint on it's back & we thought the juv. have more "washed out" colours.

As with Koel, an article in Taiwan says that the most easy feature is the blue glossy on the crown/head.  Only asian has this blue glossy colour.  Check the various photo galleries.
