Latest "List of HK Birds" with Chinese Name  - 2014-06-09

One change to the Hong Kong List main Category I-II was made at the Records Committee Meeting of 9th June, the addition of Rosy Minivet to Category I.

With this change, the HK List increases to 526.

Please see the comments from Geoff Welch, Secretary of Records Committee:

Two species have been added to the list.

Geoff Carey has already mentioned Rosy Minivet, a new addition to the main Category I-II List which now stands at 526 species. There is also an addition to the Category III List, Lord Derby’s Parakeet, a male and female photographed by Alan Pong at Tsing Yi Park on 1st November 2013 – see this thread
– 2013-Nov-01 Unknown parrots 2 鸚鵡兩隻。

Lord Derby’s Parakeet is a Near-threatened Species, present only in a fairly small area of southwest China, so it was an unexpected ‘escape’ species, whoever lost this pair must be very annoyed. And it shows that regular work at a local ‘patch’ can generate some great results, well done Alan (perhaps we should call it Lord Alan’s Parakeet!).

The Records Committee uses the taxonomy of The International Ornithological Congress (IOC) and their latest World List Version 4.2 contains many changes affecting the Hong Kong List. The main ones are as follows

Chinese Francolin and Japanese Quail move from first place to go after ducks

There are changes in the order of raptors and all falcons move to after woodpeckers

There are changes in the order of chats and ‘ficedula’ flycatchers like Narcissus move further down the order.

This has been quite complicated to prepare. If anyone finds any errors, please contact me.

Secretary, Records Committee

The species category definition is as follows:

Category I: species that have been recorded in an apparently wild state in HK.

Category IIA: southeast China breeding species, the currently established HK breeding population of which is considered to derive from captive stock, but which probably occurred in HK prior to habitat changes.

Category IIB: extralimital species that, although originally introduced to HK by man, maintain a regular feral breeding stock without necessary recourse to further introduction.

Category IIC: previously established feral species.

Category III: species for which all published HK records are considered likely to relate to birds that have escaped or have been released from captivity.

*Category III species do not form part of the official HK List which is only Category I and II species.
