在亞洲自然保育基金2022-23的資助下，馬來西亞自然協會（MNS）於2024年12月完成水鳥調查。這個項目旨在透過鳥類調查，找出沙巴新潛在重要鳥類及生物多樣性區（IBA）。

調查人員在幾個關鍵濕地進行實地考察，包括位於西海岸的馬魯都灣和克里亞斯半島，以及東部的穆米昂泥灘。在這三個地點觀察到28種鳥類共2,280隻個體，其中在馬魯都灣觀察到1,518隻個體尤為引人注目，當中亦不乏受威脅物種，例如瀕危的大濱鷸與紅腰杓鷸、易危的黃嘴白鷺與灰斑鴴，以及包括紅腹濱鷸、禿鸛及白腰杓鷸等五種近危物種，由此反映該地區作為水鳥關鍵棲息地的重要性。該項目的結果預計將支持馬魯都灣被提名為新IBA。

此外，社區參與對於棲息地保育也至關重要。此項目涉及多個主要利益相關者，包括土地所有者、當地居民、沙巴森林部（SFD）和沙巴野生動物部（SWD）。通過培訓和讓社區成員參與水鳥監測，提高他們對該地區自然保護的責任感，有助於地點的研究及保育可持續性。

Coastline Waterbird Survey in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo

Under the subsidy of the Asia Conservation Fund 2022-23, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) successfully completed the waterbird survey in December 2024. The project aims to identify the new potential Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) in Sabah.

Fieldworks were carried out in key wetland sites, including Marudu Bay and Klias Peninsula on the west coast, and Mumiang mudflat on the east. A total of 28 species and 2,280 individuals were observed in the three sites, with notable congregations observed in Marudu Bay (1,518 individuals), in which a great variety of globally threatened waterbird species were recorded, including endangered Great Knot and Far Eastern Curlew, Vulnerable Chinese Egret and Grey Plover, and five near-threatened species such as Red Knot, Lesser Adjutant and Eurasian Curlew. Therefore, it reflects the importance of this region as a critical habitat. The results of this project are expected to support the nomination of Marudu Bay as a new IBA.

Besides, community engagement is also important for habitat conservation. Several key stakeholders are involved in this project, including landowners, locals, the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) and the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD). By training and engaging community members in waterbird monitoring, a sense of stewardship for the region’s natural heritage is enhanced, which benefits the long-term sustainability of research and conservation works for the sites.
