Open Country

Open country is area that is open, with short vegetation and a low level of human activity. These habitats can be found easily in Hong Kong. Examples of this are shrublands, grassland and abandoned farmland. The slopes of some high hills are much dryer. Here the only vegetation type is shrubs and ferns; there are also flooded lowland areas which have become overgrown with grasses. These are the best places for raptors including eagles, buzzards and falcons. There is a good chance for spotting Chinese Francolin and the rare Large Grass Warbler at higher altitudes. On the fringes of woodland areas, there is a chance for cuckoos, coucals, and buntings. In the evening, it is worthwhile to listen for the eerie calls of nightjars and owls.
